Reducing Water Consumption

The Village has established strategies to manage water and is actively engaged in regional planning efforts. The Village’s Department of Public Works' responsibilities include water supply, distribution, and quality assurance (complying with IEPA and USEPA standards); operation maintenance and repairs; and monthly well exercises and water sampling. The Department also assists homeowners in investigating high-water usage if the resident cannot determine the cause and implements the Village's Cross Connection Control and Backflow Prevention program. Water efficiency benefits us all - the Village, private property owners and users, and our shared environment.

WaterSense Program

In late 2009, the Village of Hoffman Estates began working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency WaterSense program to bring residents information and tips on how to conserve water. WaterSense is an EPA-sponsored partnership program that seeks to protect the future of our Nation's water supply by promoting water efficiency and enhancing the market for water-efficient products, programs, and practices. The WaterSense program is very similar in design to the Energy Star program and label.

Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) Water Plan
CMAP developed the Water 2050: Northeastern Illinois Water Supply/Demand Plan to identify CMAP’s strategy to promote efficiency and conservation of regional water resources. The Village will cooperate with and support regionally-coordinated water systems plans through Northwest Suburban Municipal Joint Action Water Agency (NSMJAWA) of Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Hanover Park, Elk Grove Village, Mount Prospect, Streamwood, and Rolling Meadows. The NSMJAWA plan provides for actions in everyday operation, as well as actions for emergency conditions which could occur in the water system and disrupt flow to member communities.

Stormwater Program

The program includes the maintenance of 218 miles of storm sewer mains in addition to the many miles of creeks inside Village boundaries. Program staff also monitors flow condition of 73 miles of private storm sewer mains. The Village’s stormwater management uses best management practices (BMPs), as required by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program. For more information, see the Village's homeowner stormwater tip sheet.

Sustainability Plan Connections
In addition to interaction with the environmental partners above, the Village of Hoffman Estates addresses ways that it can improve aspects of water conservation and efficiency in the Sustainability Plan. Items specific to the Water section are listed below:

1) Adhere to prescribed water usage levels for the Village through 2020.

2) Initiate a mechanism to track the energy saved by installed Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).

3) Replace obsolete hydrants to prevent failure and leaks. CIP

4) Replace aged valves to prevent failure and leaks. CIP

5) Replace and repair water mains located in corrosive soil to prevent failure and leaks. CIP

6) Identify a location and necessary resources to install a community rain garden.

*CIP identifies items that would need to be included in the Village's Capital Improvement Plan.
