The federal government will require Americans to use a valid U.S. passport or obtain a REAL ID to fly
domestically beginning May. 7, 2025 (extended from Oct. 1, 2021).

Passport Processing

Passport processing on a routine basis takes approximately 10-13 weeks* (with proper documentation). Please bring the following with you:

  1. A completed (unsigned) application if you have one.  If not, our office will supply one to you.  Complete using black ink only.  Applications that have been modified with liquid fluid corrector such as "White Out" are unacceptable and will need to be rewritten. If printing application at home do not print double-sided; these applications are not acceptable.
  2. An original or certified copy of your birth certificate from the county or state where you were born which INCLUDES parental information.  Short form abstracts, hospital certificates or birth "registrations" are NOT acceptable. If you are a naturalized citizen, you must bring your original certificate of naturalization.  Note: for security purposes we cannot make copies of any documents.
  3. Your current or expired passport if you are renewing (renewal for minor applicants will require a birth certificate in addition to old passport).  If your passport is damaged, you must appear in person to apply.
  4. Current identification such as a driver's license, state ID or other government issued ID. Bring a copy of the front and back of the identification you will be presenting; copy on single-sided, standard paper only.
  5. Applications without Social Security numbers (or other vital information) will not be accepted. If you have a Social Security card, you may bring it with you for verification purposes only (you do not submit this card w/application).
  6. One passport photo with a white or light background is required (we do not process photos).
  7. Passport Book fees -  $130 for adults (age 16 & up); $100 for minor children (age 15 & under); must be paid in the form of a check or money order only to the U.S. Department of State. In addition, there is a separate $35 acceptance fee per application payable by cash, check, or charge to the Village of Hoffman Estates (you will pay this fee at any acceptance facility).

Minor children (age 15 and under) must be present along with both parents. If submitting DS-3053, copy of front & back of a government issued ID for the consenting parent must be included.  Applicants aged 16 & 17 years old must have one parent present and have current, government issued identification.

If you plan to expedite there is an additional fee of $60 (to the US Dept. of State); with the exception of passport cards, return overnight delivery is available. Currently, expedited processing takes approximately 7-9 weeks* door-to-door (with proper documentation & return overnight delivery).

Also available is the U.S. Passport Card which can be used to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda at land border crossings or sea ports-of-entry.  It is more convenient and less expensive than a passport book, however, the passport card cannot be used for international air travel.  Card fees are $30 for an adult and $15 for a minor; a $35 acceptance fee applies.

*Note that these times do not promise OR guarantee delivery in this time period.  The processing times are averages.
