The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) publishes floodplain maps which show the areas of the Village of Hoffman Estates that would be affected by the 1% annual chance flood (100-year flood) labeled as Zone A. This information can be beneficial for evaluating your insurance needs. Homeowners located in Zone A are required to have flood insurance, which is a separate policy from your homeowner insurance.
The Engineering Division has copies of the floodplain maps to determine the floodplain status of all properties in Hoffman Estates. The Engineering Division can help you verify your floodplain status. For further information, please contact the Engineering Division or visit the FEMA Map Service Center.
FEMA has revised the floodplain maps as of August 19, 2008. For those homeowners that received a Letter of Map Change (LOMC), Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA), Letter of Map Revision (LOMR) or Letter of Map Revision Based on Fill (LOMR-F) for your home, FEMA has published a Revalidation Letter. The Revalidation Letter is used to update the determination that your home is no longer declared in the floodplain. The Effective Date (August 20, 2008) and the Map Panel Numbers have been updated to coordinate with the new floodplain maps.
The Revalidation Letter lists your property three ways and includes the Case Number, Determination Date and Property Identifier (address or legal description). The list then states the new Floodplain Map Panel Number where your property is located and that it is in Zone X (no floodplain).
The FEMA Map Service Center can supply you with the current flood maps for your address. The most current maps are available to view with aerial maps to pinpoint your home exactly with relation to any floodplain in the vicinity.
Floods are the most common hazards in the US and most homeowners insurance do not cover flood damage. Everyone is at risk of flooding. A wealth of information about the National Flood Insurance Program, administered by FEMA can be found at www.floodsmart.gov. Information about the different flood insurance policy types that are available in your area including information related to coverage, premium estimates, and insurance agents are provided.
Poplar Creek and Spring Creek Watershed Update
On behalf of FEMA, the Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS) has completed a technical study and released Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) and Flood Insurance Study (FIS) reports for the Poplar Creek and Spring Creek watersheds in Cook County. The FIRM and FIS are the basis for regulatory determination of the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA), commonly known as floodplain. If you have any questions, please contact Alan Wenderski, PE.
