Saving energy is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to become more environmentally friendly.  The Village continues to reduce our total energy consumption, and promote programs for residents and businesses as well.  Read on for a brief description of Village programs, and for further details, email grow2green@hoffmanestates.org.

Reducing Energy Usage in the Household

Reducing Energy Usage in the Workplace

Reducing Energy Consumption at Municipal Facilities
Here are just a few ways that the Village is becoming more energy efficient:

  • Village implementation of a reduction in Village Fleet idling policy.
  • Five Village officials have become Certified Energy Raters.
  • Construction of two energy efficient municipal buildings and certified both as LEED-Gold facilities.
  • Participation in O-Zone Awareness and Action days.
  • Purchase of several hybrid fleet vehicles. *EECBG
  • Use of occupancy sensors in municipal buildings.
  • Installation of variable-frequency drives on Water/Sewer station pumps (reducing the energy used to initiate running the pump.)
  • Mercury Vapor-streetlamps have been changed to high-pressure Sodium lamps and LED fixtures have been installed in the Village Hall parking lot lighting and are planned for the Kenley Rupnow Public Works Center parking lot. *EECBG
  • A green roof at the Police Department building conserves energy in order to heat and cool the building.
  • An Energy Star roof reflective film has been installed on the Village Hall roof and will reflect light to reduce energy usage in cooling the building. *EECBG
  • Replacement of lighting for more energy efficient signage and lighting fixtures on the exterior and interior of the Village Hall and interior of the Public Works buildings has significantly reduced energy consumption. *EECBG
  • Installation of an automated HVAC building system at the Public Works Vehicle Maintenance facility will reduce energy consumption. *EECBG

*EECBG - This notation means that the project is to be funded (in-full or in-part) with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG), received by the Village 9/30/09.  Click HERE for more details on these projects.
