The Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund was created in 1939 by the Illinois General Assembly and began operating in 1941 with 5 original employers and $5,000 in assets. Today IMRF serves almost 3,000 employers and has approximately $41 billion in assets.
Since 1941, IMRF has provided employees of local governments and school districts in Illinois (with the exception of the City of Chicago and Cook County) with a sound and efficient system for the payment of retirement, disability, and death benefits.

This workshop is for IMRF members under 40. If you want to better understand the nature of IMRF and why you are making contributions, this webinar is for you! An IMRF representative will explain how your pension is funded, your benefits as an IMRF member, and the importance of having more than one savings vehicle as you prepare for your eventual retirement. The webinar will be approximately 1 hour.

Converting Military Service
If you served in the U.S. military, you may be eligible to convert your military service to IMRF service. The most common type is military service earned before you joined IMRF.
You may qualify for military leave service credit under the Illinois Pension Code or under a federal law.
