All things "green" will be featured and celebrated during the annual Environmental Fair slated for Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Schaumburg Township District Library (STDL), located at 130 S. Roselle Road in Schaumburg. Cohosted by STDL and the Village of Schaumburg, this event will include seminars, movies, free handouts and items available to purchase. Organizations and groups represented in the lobby include Poplar Creek Prairie Stewards, Just the Two of Us Antiques, Schaumburg Bicycle Club, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, STDL craft/face painting table, HopeNotes, Urban Worm Girl, Spring Valley Nature Center, and the Schaumburg Community Garden Club.
In the mood for a good movie? Come alone or bring friends and family to free showings of March of the Penguins at 11 a.m. and Free Willy at 2 p.m. in the Audiovisual Theatre.
Upstairs in the Rasmussen North and South rooms, the Village of Schaumburg will host several presentations on the topics of home, energy and nature that will fall into two tracks that target environmental strategies for inside and outside your living space.
- Noon: Stepping Stones to Greening Your Home
What does it take to make a home "green?" What will it cost? Registered Interior Designer Andrea Volif will answer these questions while sharing the best practices to green your home without breaking the bank.
- Noon: Recycling
Have you ever wondered how all your recyclables are sorted and where they go? Find out the answers from Greg Maxwell, senior vice president of Resource Management Services.
- 1 p.m.: Indoor Air Quality for the Home
Andrea Volif will share her professional knowledge on how to create greener and healthier indoor environments with the right plants, furniture, floor and wall coverings.
- 1 p.m.: Tips and Tricks for Green Living
Learn what it means to live a "green" lifestyle, including transportation, the home and diet from Dave Brooks, manager of conservation services for Spring Valley Nature Center and Heritage Farm.
- 2 p.m.: Energy Efficiency for Your Home
Kelly McGinnis, LEED Green Associate, will discuss the Home Energy Savings program brought to you by Nicor Gas, ComEd and a local non-profit. She will also cover the benefits of insulating and air-seeing your home to reduce energy bills.
- 2 p.m.: Getting a Jump on Your Vegetable Garden
Village of Schaumburg Environmental Committee member Jeffry Heubner and Village of Schaumburg Landscape and Sustainability Planner Martha Dooley will share tips on using products that protect plants from heavy frosts or freezes. Learn how to build a cold frame for your garden.
- 2:30 p.m.: Where Nature Comes Home
Learn how to transform your lawn into an unfolding range of colorful native prairie plants and rain gardens. Dennis Paige, native landscape consultant, will discuss native eco-friendly landscapes.
- 3 p.m.: Green Cleaning at Home
What's inside your cleaning products? Village of Schaumburg Environmental Committee Member Myrna Frankel will discuss toxic elements commonly found in everyday cleaning products and demonstrate how to make homemade cleaning products.
